About Us — Independent Broadband Diagnostic Labs
Learn about our mission, laboratory testing architecture, and independent broadband measurement standards.
1. Our Story & Corporate Entity
Virgin Media Speed Test is an independent telecommunications diagnostic research network operated and maintained by Broadband Telemetry Research Ltd. Founded by veteran telecom research engineers and network architects, our mission is to provide consumers, network administrators, and enterprise subscribers with 100% transparent, carrier-agnostic broadband telemetry.
Unlike ISP-controlled speed test utilities that host measurement endpoints within their own autonomous system numbers (ASNs) to artificially minimize latency, our diagnostic suite tests against neutral, distributed edge CDN nodes (Cloudflare Radar, Fastly, and AWS CloudFront) to simulate authentic, real-world user throughput.

3. What We Do: Carrier-Grade Diagnostic Engine
Our platform powers millions of synthetic and loaded throughput benchmarks each month across residential and commercial broadband lines. We evaluate 5 critical pillars of digital connectivity:
- Downstream Multithreaded Saturation: Measures true maximum TCP throughput using high-concurrency binary stream chunking.
- Upstream Transfer Rate: Quantifies real-world cloud backup, video conference uplink, and packet dispatch capacity.
- Unloaded Round-Trip Latency (RTT): Determines baseline optical and copper transit time under zero queue congestion.
- Loaded Latency & Bufferbloat Variance (Delta Δt): Grades router queue buffer discipline from A+ to F during active downlink/uplink stress.
- Packet Delay Variation (Jitter): Calculates mean absolute difference between sequential packet arrivals compliant with ITU-T Y.1541.
4. Our Testing Laboratory & Hardware Rig
Our testing lab maintains dedicated benchmarking racks equipped with DOCSIS 3.1 modems, 10G XGS-PON Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) 320 MHz routers, and hardware traffic generators (Spirent / Ixia). Every guide, calculator formula, and benchmark published on this site is reviewed and verified by our certified network engineering staff.
5. Editorial Independence & FTC / FCC Compliance
Broadband Telemetry Research Ltd does not sell subscriber data, nor do we accept sponsorship or promotional ranking placement from Virgin Media or any competing broadband provider. All speed test benchmarks and ISP comparisons are compiled strictly from publicly verifiable FCC Broadband Data disclosures, published rate cards, controlled lab experiments, and client-side browser diagnostics.
